Micon International Limited, a well-established minerals industry consultancy, has a vacancy for a Senior Mining Engineer in our Toronto head office. Suitably qualified and experienced Underground and Open Pit Mining Engineers are invited to join our multi-disciplinary team of professionals, providing consulting services to mining and finance industry clients around the world.

Prerequisites are a recognized Mining Engineering degree, at least five years post-graduate experience, eligibility for professional registration and skilled usage of computerized mine planning software systems. Specialty experience in, for example, ventilation, backfill, hoisting, material handling or geotechnical issues will be valued. Successful candidates should expect frequent travel away from Toronto for short periods and must possess a valid passport.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Determine appropriate extraction methods and production rates, prepare detailed mine plans, development and production and schedules, equipment and manpower lists, infrastructural requirements, estimate initial and sustaining capital expenditure and operating costs for underground and/or open pit projects ranging from Preliminary Economic Assessment to Feasibility Study level.
  • Review and develop mineral reserve estimates from resource estimates in accordance with published industry standards, guidelines and codes.
  • Develop strategic long-term mine plans for large- and small-scale mining.
  • Undertake optimization and benchmarking studies for a variety of projects.
  • Develop or assist with detailed trade-off studies
  • Review similar studies and ongoing mining operations in respect of due diligence assignments.
  • Review and comment on mining and equipment contracts.
  • Review and comment on safety regulations and requirements.
  • Write and (as a Qualified or Competent Person) take responsibility for relevant sections in reports such as NI 43-101 F1 Technical Reports.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. or higher degree in Mining Engineering or related technical degree with a minimum five years’ experience in mine planning and scheduling for underground and/or open pit operations.
  • Eligible or has already obtained membership in a Professional Engineering Association
  • Competent in the use of mine planning software such as Datamine, Vulcan, Surpac, or GEMS.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and team skills and well organized.
  • Must to be able to communicate effectively in person and in writing. Working knowledge of a second language is beneficial.
  • Experience working independently and as a member or leader of multi-disciplinary teams.
