Ecology and Environmental Professionals in the Changing Sustainability Landscape: Mineral Resources and the Energy Transition – by Karen Nash

by | Dec 13, 2021

On 8th December 2021, the UK Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) published a blog by Karen Nash, MPhil MCIEEM FRGS, VP Environmental and Social Performance at Micon. In the blog, Karen considers the role of the environmental and ecological management profession in resolving the challenges of ‘responsible mining‘ to meet the rapidly increasing needs of the energy transition and climate change mitigation. The aim of the blog is to call for reinvigoration of a more collaborative, coherent and successful approach at local, regional, national and global levels to address and resolve the inherent dilemmas, challenges and contradictions of the urgent drive to the ‘just energy transition‘.

A ‘responsible mining’ approach is inextricably linked to ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), and this creates a need for objective and timely expertise for mining and construction companies, their environmental and social specialists, and their investors. However, the old approach is too slow and there is a real need for joined-up thinking and an exploration of alternative modes of working. The blog calls for creative solutions and partnerships – the necessary rapid transformation will likely involve changes in behaviour, culture, material flows and systems of management and knowledge transition.
